There's also great beach fishing (whiting and flatties) and Urangan Pier is just 150 metres walk from Pier One. The Urangan Pier runs a kilometre out to very deep water where the fish are big and feisty. With the right bait and some fishermen's luck, you can land yourself some trevally, good sized flathead, mackerel, tuna or tasty whiting. Early in 2006 a 38 kg mackerel was caught by a young boy, who quickly gained some adult helpers, while fishing from the Pier. Bait, tackle and local knowledge are all readily available from the tackle shop across the road. Any number of locals fishing on the pier will also give you advice and free comments. And if you don't have such a good day, there's a great little fish and chip shop right there at the Pier.
